What is Casserole?

Even if you have never set foot in a kitchen you have probably heard the term "casserole." For many, it conjures up images of Pot Luck dinners or pleasant family meals. But as you’ll see, the traditional simplicity of the casserole makes it the perfect dish for busy couples looking for easy, cook-at-home meals.

"Casserole" can mean either a baking dish or the meal prepared in that dish. A "casserole dish" usually refers to an ovenproof container made of heatproof material such as glass, ceramic or metal with handles and a lid. Because the ingredients are cooked and served in the same dish, casseroles offer the convenience of a faster prep time and easy cleanup. A casserole can include a wide range of ingredients, including meat, vegetables, beans or rice, making it a versatile dish that caters to any taste. Many cooks will add a topping such as cheese or breadcrumbs for added texture and flavor.
